About the Presentation:
The majority of falls experienced by older adults occur in the home with home hazards associated with an increased risk of falling. Low-income older adults, who generally have higher disability and live in substandard housing, need feasible interventions to help them safely aging in place. The Home Hazard Removal Program (HARP) is a new home hazard removal and fall risk self-management program delivered in the home by occupational therapists to prevent falls.
Learner Outcomes:
- Increase knowledge about fall risk factors for older adults.
- Learn about an evidence-based program to reduce falls for community-dwelling older adults.
- Identify steps to implement effective fall prevention programs with community partners.
About the Presenter:

Susy Stark, PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA, is an Associate Professor in Occupational Therapy and Neurology at Washington University School of Medicine. She is the Co-director of the TL1 pre- and post-doctoral Clinical Translational Science Program and the director of the Research Education Component for the Knight Alzheimer disease Research center. Dr. Stark’s ongoing clinical and translational research projects investigate the role of the environment in supporting the performance of community dwelling adults and older adults with disability. The focus of this research is on the contribution that the environment can make toward improving the performance, participation, and quality of life for persons living with functional limitations.
